Live blog software for your website

A live blog keeps a developing story on one page: short updates with a timestamp, the newest on top, and the page keeps itself current. Livetickr is the live blog software for that. Your team writes in the dashboard or the app, your readers follow along on your own site.

The basics

What a live blog is, and when you need one

A live blog, often called a live ticker, replaces the article you would otherwise edit again and again while a story unfolds. Every update is its own entry with a timestamp. Readers see the newest first and never have to reload the page to catch up.

Typical occasions

  • Election nights and results
  • Press conferences and verdicts
  • Breaking news and storms
  • Keynotes and product launches
  • Conferences and trade fairs
  • Company news and campaigns

A live blog instead of an article edited by hand

Article, edited by hand: Every update means opening, editing and saving the whole article again.

Live blog: Every update is one entry. Write it, publish it, done.

Article, edited by hand: Readers have to reload the page to see whether anything has changed.

Live blog: New entries appear on the page by themselves.

Article, edited by hand: Only one person can edit the article at a time.

Live blog: Several editors write into the same live blog at once.

Article, edited by hand: Afterwards a long block of text, read from the bottom up.

Live blog: Afterwards an archive with every entry and its time.

Choosing a tool

What to look for in live blog software

Most live blog tools can post an update. The differences show up on your page, on your readers’ consent banner and on the big night itself.

How it gets onto your page

Why it matters: An iframe is a page inside your page, with its own height, styling and often its own consent prompt.

In Livetickr: One script tag. The feed renders directly into your page, without an iframe. On WordPress there is a block and a shortcode.

Privacy and consent

Why it matters: If the embed sets cookies or loads ads, part of your readers may not see the live blog until they agree to it.

In Livetickr: The embed sets no cookies and stores no IP addresses. Posts from other platforms load only after the reader opts in. Hosted in Frankfurt.

Several editors at once

Why it matters: On the big night one person is on site and another at the desk. Both need to post without waiting for each other.

In Livetickr: Several editors write into the same ticker at the same time. Network adds separate brands, each with its own team and roles.

Writing on the move

Why it matters: Live coverage happens where the story is, not at a desk.

In Livetickr: Apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, included in every plan. Entries wait on the phone and go out as soon as there is a connection and the app is open.

More than text

Why it matters: A quote, a photo or a post from the stage often says more than another sentence.

In Livetickr: Headlines, quotes, images, link previews and embedded posts or videos. Entries can be scheduled for a known moment.

Look and archive

Why it matters: The live blog should look like your site and stay useful once the event is over.

In Livetickr: Your brand color and three designs: timeline, markers or an editorial list. Afterwards the ticker stays online as a read-only archive.

Questions about live blog software

What is the difference between a live blog and a live ticker?

In practice, none. Newsrooms in English-speaking countries mostly say live blog, German-speaking ones Liveticker. Both mean a page of short, timestamped updates that keeps itself current while a story develops.

Do I need a WordPress plugin?

No. The script tag runs anywhere you can paste HTML: WordPress, other content management systems or a static page. On WordPress the Livetickr plugin makes it simpler still, with a block and a shortcode.

How quickly do updates reach my readers?

Within seconds. The embedded feed picks up new entries on its own, so nobody has to reload the page.

Can I try it before I pay?

Yes. Every new account gets seven days free, no credit card needed. Build a ticker and publish it on your own site with real readers. Every first purchase comes with 14 days money back.

What happens to the live blog after the event?

It stays on your page as a read-only archive with every entry and its time, so the coverage remains readable and linkable.

Can I run several live blogs at once?

Yes. On Publisher and Network you run as many tickers as you like, side by side. The Event plan covers one ticker per purchase.
