What Livetickr provides

Livetickr has an editing side and a reading side. Editors write updates in a web dashboard or in the apps for iOS and Android. Readers see those updates on the publisher's own website, where a single script tag renders the feed.

The script tag loads from cdn.livetickr.io. It renders the feed directly into the page, not inside an iframe. It works in any CMS or site that accepts HTML.

For WordPress, a plugin adds a ticker to a post or page as a block or a shortcode. The plugin is optional.

A live ticker checks for new updates automatically at a short interval. The server sets the interval, so it can change without any change to the embed code. A new update appears on every page that embeds the ticker, with no rebuild and no cache to clear.

What Livetickr is used for

Livetickr is used for coverage that is updated while an event is still happening. The Livetickr website names three groups of publishers and six typical uses.

  • Newsrooms. Breaking news, covered inside the article as the story moves. Election nights, with results, calls and swings posted as they come in.
  • Sports publishers. Live matches, as match tickers with structured goal events rather than one long block of text. Transfer deadline day, with signings and bids tracked until the deadline.
  • Tech sites and event organizers. Keynotes, covered reveal by reveal on a tech site. Conferences, with a ticker on the event's own page that updates as each session happens.

How Livetickr is organized

Livetickr organizes its content in five levels.

  • Organization. The customer's company. Plan, invoices and members belong to the organization.
  • Workspace. One website or brand. A workspace holds tickers, teams, categories, labels, branding and the domain its feeds may appear on.
  • Team. An optional group of people inside a workspace, such as a sports desk.
  • Ticker. One live feed, such as a match, an election night or a keynote. A ticker is either draft, live or closed. A closed ticker stays online and readable but accepts no new updates.
  • Update. One item in a ticker. An update is built from blocks: text, image, quote and embedded posts from other platforms. Updates can be published immediately, saved as drafts, scheduled or pinned.

One organization can run several workspaces, one per brand, each with its own team, roles and labels. Readers of a Livetickr feed can filter it by label.

What the Livetickr embed stores

The Livetickr embed sets no cookies. IP addresses and user agents are not stored.

Readers are counted with a hash of IP address, user agent and workspace, combined with a salt that changes every day. The hash is computed in memory. Hashes from different days cannot be linked to each other.

The hashes of a day are kept until that day ends, so that each reader and each vote is counted once. They are deleted after the day ends. What remains are aggregate figures: views, unique readers, readers present, clicks and dwell time, plus the reader's country and coarse device, browser and operating system categories.

The embed uses the reader's browser storage for two things only: the reader's consent choice and the updates the reader liked. Neither is sent to Livetickr.

Posts embedded from other platforms, such as videos or posts on X, load only after the reader opts in. Until then no request reaches the other platform. This consent step is on by default. A workspace can turn it off.

The Livetickr application, its database and its media storage are hosted in Frankfurt, Germany. Feeds and media are delivered to readers through a worldwide CDN.

Pricing of Livetickr

Livetickr is free during the closed beta. No launch date has been announced.

The Publisher plan costs €199 a month or €1,990 a year. It includes unlimited tickers and 500,000 pageviews a month.

The Network plan costs €499 a month or €4,990 a year. It includes unlimited tickers, five brands and 1,000,000 pageviews a month.

Publisher and Network subscriptions started within three months of the public launch cost €149 and €399 a month. This launch price is kept for as long as the subscription runs.

Distinguishing Livetickr from similar services

Livetickr is sometimes confused with the following. It is none of them.

  • Not a publisher. Livetickr runs no news sites of its own. The customer is the publisher; Livetickr is the tool.
  • Not tied to one CMS. The embed is a script tag that works in any CMS. A WordPress plugin exists, but no plugin is required.
  • Not an iframe widget. The feed renders into the page itself.
  • Not a comment or chat tool. Readers do not post in a Livetickr feed.
  • Not livetickr.com. Livetickr is at livetickr.io. The domain livetickr.com is reserved by an unrelated third party.
