Live Blog’s standard embed code adds a script and an iframe to your article. Its own live blogging guide recommends skipping the iframe and using ESI instead, so the blog stays indexable. ESI is an include that your proxy or CDN fills in before the page reaches the reader, so it needs one that supports it.
Livetickr needs neither. The script renders the updates directly into your page, in any CMS that accepts HTML, and the WordPress plugin does the same with a block. If updates rendered on the server matter most to you for search, ESI is the stronger route: Livetickr renders in the reader’s browser.
Go costs €29 per event with 72 hours of publishing, extendable by another 72. Solo costs €182 a month (€163 billed yearly) for one active live blog with one user per blog and unlimited pageviews. Team costs €514 a month (€462 yearly) for three active blogs on two domains, with five users per blog. A blog counts as active while you update it; once it is archived, the slot is free for the next one.
Livetickr costs €69 per event, live for 30 days with five team members, or €199 a month for Publisher with unlimited tickers, ten team members and 500,000 pageviews (€149 at the launch price). For one short event, Go is cheaper. For a desk where several editors cover several events a month, Publisher includes ten team members and unlimited tickers at about the price of Solo.
Live Blog lists dpa, ZEIT ONLINE, APA, NTB and Keystone-SDA among its users, and its development was supported by the Google Digital News Initiative. It offers a Reporter app for iOS and Android, social embeds, scorecards, galleries, comments, custom post types, a theme manager, statistics per embed and ads in the feed. Its code is open source under AGPL-3.0.
Livetickr is younger and narrower. It has a block editor, apps for iOS and Android, scheduled and pinned updates, labels readers can filter by, author cards and anonymous statistics. Readers do not post in a Livetickr feed; that is a choice, not a gap we plan to fill.
Both tools are run by companies in the EU: Live Blog from Prague, Livetickr from Walldorf.
The Livetickr embed sets no cookies and stores no IP addresses, and readers are counted with a hash that changes every day. By default, third-party posts load only after the reader opts in. The application, database and media storage are hosted in Frankfurt.
